I have been into origami for several years now, pretty much since i was a kid. This time I want to share with you some of the benefits that origami has brought to my life and will most definitely bring to yours if you decide to do it. They can be arbitrarily divided in two categories, internal and external.

Internal benefits of doing origami:

  • It helps you to relax. Origami, specially the more complex models, requires a certain degree of attention. This helps you concentrate on something else when your mind is thinking over and over some troubling situation. Also, origami is for the most part a non-stressful activity.

  • Improves the hand-eye coordination. This is specially true for children. Having your hands produce an object from a sheet of paper requires you to carefully manipulate it and constantly check the progress. In simple terms, you have to have control over your hands and move them according to what your eyes see.

  • Improves your hands' precision. Some of the complex models require a great deal of dexterity with the hands to be folded properly. Through practice you will be able to do very small and complex folds with nothing but your hands for tools.

  • Origami exercises both sides of the brain at the same time. Because you use both hands at the same time and for different purposes when folding a model, it is a great exercise for your left and right brain!

External benefits of doing origami:

  • It comes to be an artistic expression channel. Although it might not be the case with simple models, as your skill with paper grows, you will start to get a feeling on how the paper reacts to the folds. Through that you will be able to improvise your own models and thus create a form of art that is only yours.

  • There are many models that have a useful purpose in some situations. Being able to make a resistant paper cup, a CD case, an envelope, a box, etc... can come in handy when you are in a difficult situation.

  • Given the few requirements that origami has, it is possible to do it almost anywhere, anytime. The only things you need is a piece of paper (preferably a square) and a sturdy flat surface.

If you feel that you want to give it a try, here at How to origami are some basic resources to get you started!
